Urban planner and architect, John E. Fernandez is also an MIT professor in the architecture department’s Building Technology Program / Emergent Material Group / Urban Metabolism Group. In 2015, he was made head of the ESI (Environmental Solutions Initiative) at MIT and he also directs the International Design Center at MIT. A specialist of sustainable materials and construction strategies, he presently leads an ambitious program of categorization of types of urban spaces according to their metabolism through the use of big data processing.
