An architecture professor at the Rice School of Architecture in Houston, he also taught for many years at University of California, Berkeley. Author of After the City (2001), he is interested in the borders between nature and culture in contemporary American cities. He is currently finishing a new book entitled Toxic Ecology: At the Limit of the Entrepreneurial City about the effects of urban development on natural systems.
