Frédérique Monjanel

A trained architect, she worked for a long while with the Ateliers Jean Nouvel, and has been head of real estate development of VINCI Construction France since 2011, after occupying a similar position with ING Real Estate. She has been a member of the board of directors of Arc-en-Rêve in Bordeaux and president of the board of directors of the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-Malaquais.

Within the context of the shift from public architectural procurement towards private procurement, the real estate branch of the financial group ING has stood out on a number of occasions by powerfully driving and creating unique architectural operations, while avoiding sidelining their qualities as real estate promoters. Frédérique Monjanel gives us some insight into her career, from her time working in the agency of Jean Nouvel to her current activities as Senior Developer for ING Real Estate. ING could be a testament to the trust that architects should grant their partners in the private sector, resulting in common strategies between clients and architects in the service of cities and their inhabitants. In the face of the promises of the prophets of artificial intelligence and the marketing of those major economic players promoting the smart city as a solution to urban ills, Jérôme Denis and David Pontille remind us of the irreducible materiality and fragility of cities. Demystifying what they perceive as a form of “neopositivism” of data, they point out that data doesn’t exist per se, and in fact must be generated and then maintained at a significant cost. As a result, data is never neutral and takes on a fundamentally political dimension. Understanding this framework leads them to promote a paradigm of maintenance and fragility, instead of the more common one of sustainability and resilience, when approaching urban realities.
