Denis Chevallier

A doctor in ethnology, Denis Chevallier joined the management team of the Musée national des Arts et Traditions populaires in 2000. From 2002 to 2009, he headed the team in charge of the prefiguration of the future MuCEM in Marseille and led several research and collection programmes in the Mediterranean basin, mainly one devoted to the construction of gender in Europe and the Mediterranean. Head of the "Research and Teaching" department of the MuCEM and professor at the École du Louvre, he was the general curator of the exhibition Au Bazar du genre, Féminin - Masculin en Méditerranée.

Investigating, collecting, prefiguring: the case of Marseille's MuCEM

Denis Chevallier has headed MuCEM’s Research and Education Department since its inception. An ethologist and museum curator, he was tasked with prefiguring the new museum and ran many ‘collection surveys’ to inform its exhibitions, emphasizing objects to foster connections as is key in achieving a socially relevant museum.
