Pablo Valbuena is a visual artist. He creates rhythmic light installations to represent time and movement, altering our perceptions of space. His “illusions” distort reality and reveal imperceptible information. We collaborated together on the creation of the Modulation artwork, a series of luminous combinations evoking modularity.

Artificial intelligence sparks as much enthusiasm as fear in its applications in the built and urban environment. Architect and data scientist Stanislas Chaillou puts this innovation into perspective by replacing in its technological timeline and demystifying the way it operates, which is in fact based on statistical learning. AI brings three major contributions to architects: assistance (for tedious chores), options (in the iterative design process), and the connection to context (by taking better account of local data). AI thus carries less of a risk of standardization than an opportunity to develop a style, to adapt to multiple contexts, and to vastly increase the capabilities of architects.

The malleable, adaptable metropolis: toward a temporary and temporal urbanism

Urban planning, under the impulsion of modernism, has long been considered solely from the perspective of space. Time-based approaches are still a neglected field of public policy. However, the ongoing changes in our relationship to time and space call for a revaluation of these values. Luc Gwiazdzinski identifies the reasons why he theorizes a greater use of time-based planning to address the challenges of sustainable urban development, insisting on the notions of temporary and temporal urbanism while promoting a malleable and adaptable metropolis. Luc Gwiazdzinski is a geographer, head of the “Innovation et Territoire” Masters Program at IGA (Grenoble Alpes University), associate professor at Shanghai University, and president of the Pôle de recherche et d’expérimentation sur les arts urbains (Polau).

Xavier Veilhan is a visual artist. He represents France at the 57th Venice Biennale. Since he has been collaborating with PCA-STREAM on a regular basis for a decade, we interviewed him for the documentary “PCA-STREAM: from research to action”. In this talk, he evokes his relationship to architecture, which he considers both as a constraint to the creation process and as a source of inspiration and reflection that nourishes his practice.
